How to Avoid Similar Phone number Phishing Attacks

One of the tricks used today is the trick of similar phone numbers. A friend got a call a few days ago from someone who claimed to have wrongly used his number to request a 2FA authentication code.

Phishing is a style whereby hackers lure you into revealing your personal details to them using tricks.

A friend got a call a few days ago from someone who claimed to have wrongly used his number to request a 2FA authentication code.

My friend, due to his kind heart, decided to forward the message back. This was after seeing the message as stated and the similarity in their phone numbers.

Boom! That was how my friend’s WhatsApp was hijacked from him.

What my friend didn’t know was that any activation code sent to a number only verified the number it was sent to and the account the number was associated with.

Don’t be moved by the gospel of single-digit mistake.

There are approximately 810 single-digit variations of every phone number, and attackers take advantage of this to reach people with similar numbers.

Always remind the caller to request a new code with his or her own correct phone number if there is a code issue.

This is because you can never tell what aspect of your account they might want to access. It might be your bank account.

Be careful when it is a case of similar phone or misten identity.

Verification codes are only applicable to the phone number it were sent to. Don’t be deceived.
