What is Progressive Web Application (PWA)?

The progressive web application is a software application delivered through the Web with native-app user experience.

PWA leverage your browser’s services and functionality to create the native-app user experience you get.

Functionalities you can get from progressive web App includes working offline, push notifications, device hardware access, and native user experience.

To cut whole stories short and also to spare you with some of the developer terms.

A progressive web application is simply is a website or web application that is created in a way that they can behave like those apps you download from Play Store or your Apple store.

One advantage of a progressive web app is that it runs faster than the native Apps you download from your app stores.

Another advantage of PWA is that update happens automatically, this means that you won’t worry much about app update and you will only have to update your browser to maintain its security.

How to Install Progressive Web Application

Most websites or web applications that have progressive web application capability will always prompt you to install or add to the home screen while using it on your browsers.

To get this prompt for your social media applications like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc, I suggest you use the Chrome browser to login to your social media account on your phone.

There may be cases where you may not get the prompt to install, but you might still want to have the App on your phone home screen.

The easiest way to do that is to use the Chrome browser to open the website or web application of the social media platform you want to use as PWA.

After logging in to the social media account, then select the three vertical dots by the top right corner, that is your Chrome settings menu, and scroll down until you see add to the home screen. Select it and a progressive web app icon will appear on your phone home screen. Now you can access the App from the icon whenever you want.

Most of the social media platforms we use today have their PWA version. If a normal Facebook app will consume 300MB of your phone storage space and your Facebook lite 5MB. Then the PWA version of Facebook will take as low as 200KB of your phone Storage space. The same is applicable to Instagram and Twitter.

If saving phone Storage space is your main reason for using the lite version of your social media applications, I suggest you start using PWA and enjoy a massive free storage space.
