Steps to Install Free VPN on Your Android Phone

Step 2: Download OpenVPN Server Certificate Bundle From VPNbook and Copy Out The Username and Password

To download your VPN server, you will need to visit the vpnbook.com website in your browser or click here.

Then scroll down till you see the section for Free OpenVPN and PPTP VPN. Select the OpenVPN tab, as shown below.

Then click on any of the free VPN server certificate bundles you will like to download. This will determine the location it will show that you are using the Internet from. You can download and upload more than one server into one OpenVPN app.

OpenVPN has servers in the following locations: France, Canada, USA, etc. Choose the country location you want and download the server for it. That is the country you will appear to be using the internet from when you start using the VPN.

Note: Make sure you copy the username and password that appear at the bottom of the lists of servers; you are going to need them on your OpenVPN app in the next two steps.

Remember, this password is updated sometimes monthly. When your VPN fails to connect or stops working, check back to the VPNbook website for a new password.

After the server certificate bundle zip file is downloaded, close the browser and go back to your phone.

Step 3. Unzip the Downloaded VPN Server Certificate Bundle

The server certificate bundle you downloaded from the step above comes as a zip file. Because of this, you will have to unzip it before you can use the files.

For you to be able to unzip a file, you must have an unrar or unzip app on your phone. You can download Easy Unrar, Unzip, and Zip by Rbigsoft from the Play Store for that.

After downloading and installing the easy unrar, unzip, and zip app, navigate to your phone file explorer app to locate the downloaded file and use the unzip app to unzip the file.

Step 4: Import the Server Certificate Bundle to Your OpenVPN App

Open the OpenVPN app you downloaded. You will see a new page, as shown below, with the Import Profile title.

Then, select the FILE option to import the server certificate bundle you downloaded. Navigate to the folder where you extracted files in step 3, select one file from the folder, and click import.

You will be prompted to enter a username and password. Enter the username and password you copied from step 2 above, check the remember password box if you want, and press the Add button in the top right corner of the page.

Then you will see the page below once you click on the add button. This is where you will have the option to connect your phone to OpenVPN.

Before you click on connect, type “what is my Ip” on Google to view your public IP address. After that, toggle-on the connect button for your OpenVPN. Once your VPN is connected; then, check back your IP address again to know if it has changed to your VPN IP address.
